What to Expect on the Night
What Actually Happens During Your First Dance
As your first dance song begins, our trained operator activates the machine from the side of the room. Within seconds, a dense low-lying mist rolls across the dance floor. It reaches ankle height and stays there — thick enough to create the floating effect, low enough that you can still see each other clearly.
Your guests will have their phones up from the first second. The effect is immediately recognisable — most have seen it on television — but experiencing it at a wedding, at close range, is a different thing entirely. Photographers consistently tell us it is one of the most striking frames they capture all day.
The mist disperses naturally after three to four minutes. There is no smell, no residue, and no effect on the room. Guests who walk through it notice nothing other than a slight coolness at floor level.
The Process
How the Effect Works
Dry ice pellets
We use genuine dry ice — frozen carbon dioxide — not a fog machine or haze machine. The pellets are lowered into our professional machine in a basket, creating an instant dense, low-lying cloud.
Low-lying mist
Unlike smoke effects, dry ice mist is heavier than air and stays close to the floor. It flows across the dance floor in a natural cloud-like layer without rising into the room.
Precisely timed
Your trained staff member times the effect to begin as your first dance song starts, or at a specific moment within the song, agreed with you in advance at your pre-wedding planning meeting.
Fades cleanly
The mist naturally dissipates without residue, leaving no mess, no smell, and no lasting effect on the room. It is completely safe for guests, children, and venue environments.
Important Distinction
Genuine Dry Ice. Not a Fog Machine.
This is the most important distinction couples need to understand. Many companies advertise a "dry ice effect" using chemical haze or fog machines. We use genuine dry ice pellets in a professional machine — and the difference is significant.
Does not set off fire alarms
Dry ice is frozen carbon dioxide — a completely different substance to the chemical smoke produced by fog or haze machines. Because it releases CO2, not smoke particles, it will not trigger standard smoke detectors. Most wedding venues permit dry ice where they explicitly ban fog and haze machines.
Not a fog machine or smoke machine
Many companies offer a 'dry ice effect' using low-fog haze machines. These machines produce chemical smoke that rises over time, creates a lingering smell, and will trigger fire alarms at most venues. We use the real thing: genuine dry ice pellets in a professional machine used at concerts, theatres, and television production studios.
Safe for guests and children
The mist produced by dry ice contains no harmful chemicals. It is the same substance used in the food and medical industries worldwide. The mist disperses naturally and completely, leaving no residue on surfaces, clothing, or flooring.

Common Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Will dry ice set off the fire alarms at my venue?
No — dry ice is frozen carbon dioxide and does not produce smoke particles, so it does not trigger standard smoke detectors. This is one of the key reasons venues permit dry ice where they explicitly ban fog machines. We are happy to provide your venue with written documentation confirming the substance and machine type if their events coordinator needs it.
What is the difference between dry ice and a fog machine?
Fog and haze machines produce chemical smoke that rises, lingers, and sets off fire alarms — dry ice produces a dense, low-lying CO2 mist that stays on the floor and disperses cleanly. Most Worcestershire wedding venues — including Curradine Barns, Stanbrook Abbey, and Hogarths Stone Manor — ban fog machines but have no objection to genuine dry ice. If you are unsure about your venue's policy, we can contact them directly on your behalf.
Is a trained staff member included?
Yes — a dedicated trained operator is always included and attends separately from your DJ. This is important: the machine timing is precise, and your DJ needs to remain completely focused on your first dance moment. Our operator watches the song build and activates the machine at exactly the right second, agreed with you during planning.
Can I hire the dry ice machine without a full DJ package?
Yes — we offer the dancing-on-clouds effect as a completely standalone service. You do not need to book Blue Diamond Entertainment for DJ hire to use this service. It is well suited to couples who have a separate band or DJ but want the dry ice first dance effect handled professionally.
How long does the effect last?
The mist fills the dance floor within seconds and the effect typically lasts three to four minutes — covering the full duration of most first dance songs. The mist then disperses naturally. If you want a longer effect, additional pellets can be used. We discuss duration and timing during your pre-wedding consultation so nothing is left to chance on the night.
How does the effect photograph at different venue types?
The effect photographs differently depending on the venue's ambient lighting and ceiling height — and this is worth understanding before you book. At Hogarths Stone Manor, the warm amber room lighting catches the mist and gives it a golden glow in photographs — it looks extraordinary in print. At higher-ceilinged rooms or marquees, the mist spreads wider and thinner, which means photography works better with a tighter crop or flash. Our team advises on the best position for your photographer based on the venue.
Which venues have you provided this at?
We have delivered the dancing-on-clouds effect at Arley House and Gardens, Hogarths Stone Manor, and venues across Worcestershire and the West Midlands. We know the setup requirements, power point locations, and floor layouts at many local venues. Where we have not worked at your venue before, we request the floor plan in advance so nothing is improvised on the day.
