Cold Sparks vs Fireworks vs Sparklers: What's the Difference?

By Paul Hickey, Founder of Blue Diamond Entertainment · Published 17 August 2026

Cold sparks, indoor fireworks, wedding sparklers, and cake sparklers are four different things, often used to describe the same wedding moment. Blue Diamond Entertainment gets asked to clear this up almost every week from couples planning weddings across Worcestershire and the West Midlands. If you've seen a video online and aren't sure what the effect is actually called, you're not alone. This page explains each option plainly, so you can ask for the right thing.

"Indoor Fireworks" Almost Always Means Cold Sparks

When someone says "indoor fireworks for a wedding," they're almost always describing cold sparks, not a conventional firework display. Conventional fireworks use an explosive charge and are never used indoors near guests — the visual similarity to cold sparks is where the confusion starts.

Cold sparks are designed specifically to create that firework-like visual effect safely at close range, which is why the two get talked about interchangeably online.

Are Cold Sparks the Same as Wedding Sparklers?

No — handheld sparklers are held directly by guests and get genuinely hot, while cold sparks are machine-operated and kept at a set distance from anyone standing nearby. They're often used for different moments: sparklers for a guest send-off or exit walk, cold sparks for the first dance, entrance, or cake cutting.

Some couples book both for different parts of the evening. They're not substitutes for each other.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I have real fireworks at my indoor wedding venue?

No — conventional fireworks are not used indoors, at any venue, under any circumstances. Cold sparks are the indoor-safe alternative that creates a similar visual effect.

Is a cold-spark machine the same as a Sparkular?

Sparkular is a specific manufacturer's brand name for a cold-spark machine, similar to how "Hoover" is a brand name for a vacuum cleaner. Not every cold-spark machine is a Sparkular, though the terms are sometimes used interchangeably.

Which effect is best for a first dance — cold sparks or sparklers?

Cold sparks are the standard choice for a first dance, since they're positioned around the couple during the dance itself. Handheld sparklers are typically used later in the evening, for a guest send-off rather than the dance.

Do cold sparks look as dramatic as real fireworks in photos?

Yes — cold sparks are specifically designed to create a bright, photogenic spark fountain at close range, which real fireworks can't safely do indoors. This is part of why they've become the standard choice for indoor first-dance photography.
